Words in French can either be male or female and so we have to learn whether to use 'le' or 'la' (meaning 'the') with them.
It's easy with our key words for this topic
-
dad, brother, grandfather are all male and use 'le'
le papa, le frère, le grand-père
-
whereas mum, sister, grandmother and aunt are all female and use 'la'
la maman, la soeur, la grand-mère et la tante.
BUT it does get harder with other words
e.g. book, bed, telephone are all male words and use 'le'
le livre, le lit, le téléphone
but picture, chair and television are female words and use 'la'
la peinture, la chaise et la télévision.
It is important to learn 'le' or 'la' with each new word.
